The volume of commercials in these airtime + bonus packages doesn’t always provide the value that an advertiser needs. The bonused airtime is what would otherwise be unsold– so other advertisers didn’t want to buy those time slots–mostly in overnights or daytime programming. These packages are usually $2,500-$4,000 per month with a 6 to 12-month commitment and include the cost of production. Often, the packages include digital ads, which usually are run-of-site on the station’s website (not targeted to your demo or to prospective customers’ online).While you’ll almost always receive that value in airtime, the programs or even the stations that it runs on are at the station’s discretion. Your commercials may air in programs with very few of your key demo in the audience; the schedule is also not able to be duplicated in following months, if it did work well.
